The climate crisis, the transformation of our energy system and geopolitical tensions pose major challenges for Germany and Europe. Key technologies such as Artificial Intelligence offer solutions, but their use is also associated with risks.

"We need to get people excited about the fact that the future can be successfully shaped with AI, that AI pays into what is important to us, and thus instill confidence that we can succeed in implementing the necessary evolution for a sustainable and good life at the required speed. To achieve this, we need to continue a broad social dialog about Artificial Intelligence, a responsible use of the technologies and a strong AI location in Germany," says Reinhard Ploss, Co-Chair of Plattform Lernende Systeme.

Plattform Lernende Systeme, initiated by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and based at acatech, has been organizing the exchange between science, industry and civil society on the topic of AI since 2017. Its current progress report "With AI to Innovation and Sustainable Growth. Researching Applications, Exploiting Potentials, Accelerating Transfer" makes a contribution to the innovation and sociopolitical AI discourse. On just under 100 pages, the report provides an overview of the various topics as well as central results of Plattform Lernende Systeme. In their impulses, experts from the network discuss focal points of AI research and application in Germany as well as current opportunities and challenges of the technology - for example in the automotive industry, medicine and care or in the field of robotics systems with learning capabilities. They also show what framework conditions need to be created to ensure that people always remain at the center of technological development.
